Sküma Water review: Is the MY Station worth it?

  • 10 min read

If you’re looking at Sküma, you’re probably not just after a normal water filter.

A jug filter is one thing. The Sküma MY Station is basically the Stanley Cup of countertop RO systems — a bit extra, looks sleek, and something people either really want in their lives or don’t quite get the hype about.

Skuma countertop reverse osmosis water filter with a glass of clear water on a modern kitchen worktop.

It filters your tap water using reverse osmosis, dispenses instant hot water, and adds minerals back in so the finished water tastes better and doesn’t have that flat RO taste.

That last bit matters. I use reverse osmosis water at home, and while it’s brilliant for hard water, limescale, tea, coffee, cooking and ice, plain cold RO water can taste a bit flat.

So, we analysed 100 Sküma water reviews to see what real buyers were saying — especially around taste, hard water, limescale, scummy tea, reliability and day-to-day use.

Our review process

Most product reviews give you one person’s opinion.

This isn’t just one person’s opinion.

We analysed reviews from 100 real Sküma customers — people who had bought, used and lived with the MY Station.

No cherry-picking. Just the good, the bad, and what it’s actually like using Sküma day to day.

We looked for the patterns: what customers loved, what frustrated them, and whether Sküma lived up to the hype in everyday use.

Quick verdict: is Sküma worth it?

Yes — if you care about the quality of the water you drink every day and want more than a basic filter.

In our 100-review analysis, 93% of Skuma customers were positive, with the biggest praise going to cleaner-tasting water, countertop convenience, hot water, minerals and customer service.

Sküma water review: our 100-review analysis

We analysed 100 Sküma Trustpilot reviews to uncover the recurring themes — what customers genuinely love, the frustrations that come up, and whether Sküma lives up to its promises in everyday use.

Overall, 93% of the reviews we analysed were positive, based on 4 and 5-star ratings.

The remaining 7% were negative, with complaints mainly around faulty machines, leaks, refund delays and reliability issues.

What customers liked most

Better-tasting water

The biggest positive theme was taste.

In the reviews we analysed, customers repeatedly described the water as fresh, clean, smooth, crisp or better than tap water. Some said it tasted better than bottled water, while others said Sküma had helped them stop buying bottled water altogether.

This is one of the strongest review signals for Sküma. People were not just saying the machine looked nice — they were noticing a real difference in the water they drank every day.

Less bottled water

Another strong theme was bottled water replacement.

Several customers said they had been buying bottled water before Sküma and wanted a better alternative, whether for cost, convenience, plastic waste or concerns about microplastics.

For us, this is one of Sküma’s biggest selling points. It is not just filtering water; it is trying to replace a bottled-water habit.

Hot water convenience

The hot water feature came up a lot in the reviews.

Customers liked being able to make tea, coffee and hot drinks without waiting for the kettle. Some also mentioned using Sküma water in the kettle and noticing less need for descaling.

This is something we really understand because we use the Waterdrop A2 at home, and having instant hot filtered water is a genuine game changer. It sounds like a small convenience until you stop spending your life waiting for the kettle to boil.

Minerals and smoothness of water

Customers also talked about the mineral side of Sküma.

Several reviews mentioned mineralised water, mineral boosters or being able to personalise the mineral profile. Others described the water as smooth, balanced or not flat — which matters because plain reverse osmosis water can taste a bit empty when it is cold.

So the mineral feature does seem to be part of the appeal, not just a gimmick.

Easy to use day to day

Ease of use was another recurring positive.

Customers described Sküma as easy to use, easy to set up, easy to maintain, or something that quickly became part of their daily routine. A few reviews did say the instructions or set-up could be clearer, so it was not perfect for everyone, but the overall theme was that people found it convenient once they were using it.

Helpful customer service

Customer service came up a lot — mostly positively.

Many reviewers praised the Sküma team for being quick, helpful and responsive, especially when they had questions, set-up issues, repairs or replacement parts.

However, this is also where some of the negative reviews sat, so it is not one-sided. Most people had a good support experience, but the unhappy customers tended to mention slow replies, refund delays or frustration when faults needed sorting.

Sleek design

A smaller but still clear theme was design.

Customers described the machine as sleek, modern, compact or good-looking on the worktop. This will not matter to everyone, but for a countertop appliance that lives out in the kitchen, it is a useful plus.

What customers didn’t like

Faults and reliability issues

Only 7% of the reviews we analysed were negative, but the main concern in those reviews was reliability.

A small number of customers mentioned faulty machines, leaks, pump problems, replacement issues or machines that stopped working properly. This was not the majority experience, but because Sküma is a premium product, it is still worth knowing before you buy.

That said, we also run a plumbing company, so we’re realistic about products that deal with water. Pumps, seals, tanks and fittings can occasionally cause problems — even with good-quality products. The important thing is not that faults never happen, but how quickly and fairly they are resolved.

Waste water and day-to-day maintenance

The other drawback was the usual trade-off with countertop reverse osmosis: waste water and upkeep.

Some customers found the waste water tank annoying to empty, especially with regular use. A few also mentioned set-up niggles, descaling, mineral issues or needing help from customer service.

Overall, the negative reviews were not really about the taste of the water. They were mostly about the machine itself — reliability, maintenance and how smoothly issues were resolved.

Does Sküma help with hard water?

For drinking water, yes — it should help.

Sküma uses reverse osmosis, and reverse osmosis is one of the strongest ways to reduce dissolved minerals in drinking water. Those dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium, are what form limescale when water is heated or evaporates.

So if your main problem is scale in your kettle, scummy tea or hard-water taste, Sküma is much more serious than a basic carbon filter.

What customers said about hard water, scale and scummy tea

For hard water homes, the most useful comments were around better-tasting drinks, clearer tea and less scale in the kettle.

Several customers mentioned hard water, scale, descaling, chalky water or scummy tea in their reviews:

“Bought the unit because my friend has got one and he highly rated its performance , so we have installed one two , we have very hard water and the skuma unit has made a great difference Very pleased so far .”

“Previously kettles used to need descaling but 3 months in the kettle is brand new.”

“Ive had this Skuma for over 2 years now and never once had to descale my kettle!”

“No scale on tea and ive mentioned before how I filtered a bottle of flat Pepsi... guess what? ... clean drinking water came out!”

“No scummy tea which tastes amazing and the water tastes clean so I bought one too.”

“No bitter aftertaste, no chalky feeling - just pure, delicious water.”

What we like about Skuma

1. The minerals should help with taste

This is one of the biggest reasons Sküma stands out from a standard countertop RO system.

Reverse osmosis is brilliant at stripping out dissolved solids, which is why it works so well for hard water and limescale. But the downside is that plain RO water can taste a bit flat, especially cold.

I find this at home with our own RO system. For tea, coffee and cooking, RO water is brilliant. But for cold drinking water, minerals make a difference.

Sküma’s approach is to purify first, then add minerals back in using different mineral profiles.

Sküma says its system rebuilds the finished water with a chosen mineral profile after reverse osmosis removes dissolved solids, including minerals.

That makes sense to us. If you want the benefits of RO without the flat taste, remineralisation is a big plus.

2. The hot water feature is genuinely useful

This is one of those features that sounds nice but becomes much more valuable once you live with it.

We use a countertop RO system with hot water at home, and it has changed how often we use the kettle. Hot filtered water on demand is brilliant for tea, coffee, herbal tea, instant drinks and filling pans.

Sküma’s MY™ Station dispenses hot or room-temperature water, with temperature options including around 92°C, 85°C, 75°C and 50°C according to its help information.

For hard water homes, this is especially useful because the water has already been filtered by RO before it is heated. That means you are not constantly boiling hard tap water and creating scale in a kettle.

3. British brand appeal

One thing we like about Sküma is that it does not feel like a random marketplace RO machine with a logo added on.

Sküma is a UK-registered business and uses “Made in Britain” messaging, which gives it more brand substance than some generic countertop filters online.

It's a nice extra if you like supporting a UK-based brand and want easier access to customer service, replacement filters and support.

What we don’t like about Sküma

1. It is expensive compared with basic filters

This is not a cheap way to filter water.

Compared with a jug filter, on-tap filter or simple under-sink carbon filter, Sküma is a big upfront purchase. You are paying for reverse osmosis, hot water, remineralisation and the countertop design.

For some homes, that will be worth it. For others, especially if you only want slightly better-tasting tap water, it may be overkill.

2. Waste water emptying may annoy you

Reverse osmosis creates waste water. That is normal.

But with a countertop system, you are more aware of it because you have to empty the waste water yourself. Some reviewers mentioned this as a frustration, especially when using the machine a lot.

If you want the most hands-off RO option, an under-sink system may feel easier day to day because the waste water goes straight to the drain.

3. Mineral refills are another ongoing cost

The Super-Filter may only need changing around once a year, but the mineral bases are separate.

Sküma says each MY™ Base produces around 40 litres of mineralised water.

If you use the mineral feature all the time, factor that into the running cost. You can use the machine without bases, but then you lose one of the biggest reasons to buy Sküma over a simpler RO machine.

Who Sküma is best for

Sküma is best for people who want a premium countertop drinking water system and will actually use the extra features.

It makes most sense if you:

  • care about the quality of the water you drink every day

  • want to reduce contaminants, microplastics or bottled water use

  • want reverse osmosis without plumbing

  • like the idea of remineralised water for better taste

  • live in a hard water area

  • hate the taste of tap water

  • want better tea and coffee

  • would use instant hot filtered water every day

It is probably not the best choice if you just want the cheapest way to improve tap water taste.

Who should avoid Sküma?

Sküma may not be right if:

  • you have very limited worktop space

  • you do not want to manually empty waste water

  • you do not want ongoing mineral refill costs

  • you only need basic taste improvement

It is also worth being aware of the reliability complaints. Most customers were happy, but because this is an expensive appliance, we would want to buy from somewhere with a clear returns process and warranty support.

Alternatives to Skuma

Sküma is a strong option if you want a premium countertop RO system with hot water and minerals, but it will not be the right fit for everyone.

Waterdrop: best if you want a bigger RO range

If you like the idea of reverse osmosis but want more choice, Waterdrop is the brand we’d compare most closely.

Waterdrop has a much wider RO range, including countertop systems like the A2 and under-sink systems like the G2P600, G3P600 and G3P800. That means you can choose between a worktop machine, a compact under-sink setup, or a higher-flow system for busier homes.

We use a Waterdrop A2 at home and the instant hot water has been a genuine game changer. The main difference is that Sküma leans harder into the mineral-water side, while Waterdrop gives you more RO system options overall.

Maverick Mav 02: best if your main issue is taste and kettle scale

If your main problem is better-tasting water and limescale in your kettle, you may not need to go to the expense of reverse osmosis.

The Maverick Mav 02 is an inline under-sink filter that usually costs around £115–£135. It connects to your cold kitchen tap, so it does not take up worktop space and there is no countertop tank to fill.

It is not a reverse osmosis system, but it does include anti-scale technology and is designed to help with better-tasting water and day-to-day limescale management.

So, if you want the strongest drinking-water filtration, Sküma or Waterdrop RO makes more sense. But if your biggest frustration is kettle scale, hard-water taste and wanting something simpler under the sink, Maverick is a strong alternative.

Skuma specs at a glance

Sküma review: is it worth it?

Sküma is not the cheapest way to filter tap water, but it is one of the more interesting countertop systems we’ve looked at.

The 100-review analysis was strongly positive, with 93% of reviews rating Sküma 4 or 5 stars. Customers repeatedly praised the taste, hot water feature, minerals, design and convenience. For hard water homes, the comments around no scummy tea, less kettle descaling and better-tasting drinks were especially useful.

Our main reservations are waste water emptying and the small number of reliability complaints.

But if you want reverse osmosis without plumbing, like the idea of minerals for better taste, and would genuinely use instant hot filtered water every day, Sküma looks like a strong option for hard water homes.
